Biomedical Research

 

 A challenging and empowering career ! AHTs in Biomedical Research may be employed as Lab Animal Technicians, Animal or Surgical Service Coordinators, Lab Animal Training Coordinators or Facility Managers. AHTs working in research must adhere to guidelines outlined by the Canadian Council on Animal Care (CCAC). Certification with the Canadian Association for Lab Animal Science (CALAS) is an asset.

 

Laboratory animals include, but are not limited to:

  • Non-human primates
  • Rodents
  • Rabbits
  • Guinea Pigs
  • Swine
  • Avians & Aquatics
  • Ungulates & Ruminants

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

 

  • Daily husbandry of laboratory animals
  • Coordinate & maintain the laboratory animal facility
  • Assistance to laboratory personnel
  • Administration of study compounds
  • Necropsy & tissue sample collection
  • Surgical assistance; anesthesia
  • Surgical model creation of disease
  • Knowledge of Bio Safety Levels
