Information for Writing the Canadian National Registration Exam (CNRE) Formerly the VTNE

The CNRE is written twice a year, in June. (and in January if numbers warrant a second CNRE sitting)


To write the CNRE you must :

  1. Be a graduate of a 2 year recognized diploma program, such as Animal Health Technology at Red River College.
  2. Be a student member of MAHTA. To become a student member please contact the MAHTA office
  3. Pay all associated fees as listed in the CNRE Application Form

The exam is held at Red River College. If a January exam is conducted it may be held at the MAHTA offices, 6014 Roblin Blvd. Winnipeg, MB R3R OH4. *Confirmation of location can be made at time of registration.*

Time & Length of Exam:

Registration for the exam runs from 8:15 to 8:45 a.m. Candidates will be shown to their seats and instructions will be read from 8:45 to 9:00 a.m. The exam begins at 9:00 a.m. and ends at 1:00 p.m. Calculators, cameras, recording devices and reference materials of any kind are prohibited in the testing room.

Items to bring on the day of the exam:

1. A piece of photo identification.

2. Any balance of fees owing. Money orders or certified cheques only payable to MAHTA.

3. Your current MAHTA membership card or proof of membership with MAHTA.

4. Exam ID card which has been sent to you.

5. Any borrowed study guides.
